How To

How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.

You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
