How To

How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

What age is required to become a HWOF star?

To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened to the stolen stars? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
