How To
How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.
If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.
The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.
Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. For example, if your first nomination was in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if it had been in 1980, you would owe 10,000.
You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
What age is required to become a HWOF star?
One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.
Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?
