How To

How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.

What age is required to become a HWOF star?

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Your family members can nominate you for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
