Henry VIII used his power against the Catholic Church during his reign to advance his goals. The Laws of Wales Acts created a legal union between England, Wales, and Henry became the first English monarch in charge of Ireland. Henry became the first English monarch crowned King in Ireland by virtue of the Act. Ireland was previously a papal possession. Henry VIII had ambitions to establish a united Ireland, but it was not possible without the modifications made to Parliament. This change reorganized Parliament's roles and set the scene for a clash between Parliament (and the Crown) that lasted until 1866.
Oliver Cromwell attempts to restore England to Roman Catholicism
The Reformation brought about the re-establishment of Church of England. Oliver Cromwell signed the death warrant for King Charles I in 1649. He was an officer in the Rump parliament (1649-53) and ruled the brief-lived Commonwealth of England. He was appointed in 1650 to lead the English army against the Irish Confederate. The English forces defeated the Irish army and occupied Ireland, where they passed the Penal Laws. The English forces waged war against both the Scottish army and the English in 1650-1651.
